We can announce that Shokat Lal has been recommended to be appointed to the role of Chief Executive at Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, subject to approval at Full Council.
Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council published their Full Council agenda with the recommendation of the appointment.
Shokat said: “Whilst I am delighted that I have been recommended to be appointed by Sandwell, I will be sad to leave Barnsley, the level of ambition, drive and energy in making Barnsley better is there for all to see and it truly is the place of possibilities. I particularly want to thank Sarah, Cllr Sir Steve Houghton, CBE, Cllr Gardiner and the cabinet for all the support they have given me in helping move the council forward.”
Sarah Norman, Chief Executive of Barnsley Council, said: "I would like to offer my congratulations to Shokat Lal on his new role as Chief Executive of Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council.
"In his role as Executive Director for Core, Shokat leads the delivery of our Core Services such as HR, Business improvement, Health Safety and Emergency resilience, Communications and Marketing, Legal and Governance, Finance and Customer, Information and Digital Services.
"Shokat has played a key role in Barnsley's journey over the last three years. He has helped cement our ambition and work with partners to make Barnsley the place of possibilities and supporting our transformation and modernisation work across the council. He will be missed very much.
"We will shortly begin the process of recruiting to the role of Executive Director of Core Services."
