Full fibre broadband opportunity for Billingley and Tankersley

Residents and businesses in Billingley and Tankersley can benefit from an exciting plan to give rural communities across South Yorkshire access to full fibre broadband.

The Government's Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme provides broadband funding for rural homes and businesses, offering up to £3,500 for businesses and up to £1,500 for residential premises to support the cost of installing full fibre broadband.

Broadband infrastructure provider Openreach has launched a new project which allows those living and working in Billingley and Tankersley to pledge their Gigabit Broadband Vouchers to help Openreach fund the installation of gigabit-capable, full fibre broadband.

Full fibre networks use fibre optic cables to connect the exchange directly to homes and businesses providing speeds up to 1 Gigabit (1000Mbps). This technology is faster and more reliable than traditional copper-based networks.

To check eligibility and to pledge vouchers visit the Openreach website: https://www.openreach.com/connect-my-community

Two online presentation and question and answer sessions will be held on Tuesday 12 and Tuesday 19 January 2021 at 7.00pm. The sessions, hosted by Superfast South Yorkshire and presented by Openreach, provide the chance to learn more about the scheme and ask any questions. To register, please visit: bit.ly/sfsybarnsley

Robert Thorburn, Openreach's Partnership Director for the North, said: "This is a really exciting opportunity for Billingley and Tankersley to bring full fibre infrastructure to the very hardest-to-reach local addresses. But it's only possible with everyone working together – you, your neighbours and Openreach.

"Everyone who pledges a voucher will be doing their bit to help make Billingley and Tankersley two of the best-connected places in South Yorkshire. Pledging couldn't be simpler, but we need residents to act quickly as the scheme closes in March 2021.

"Thousands of homes and businesses across South Yorkshire can already upgrade to the Openreach full fibre network, and local people can use our online postcode checker to see what's now available.

"We're investing £12 billion to build full fibre broadband to 20 million homes – and more than three million of those will be in the toughest third of the UK – but we can't upgrade the whole country alone. This latest support from the government, alongside help to remove red tape and barriers that slow down the build, is vital."

To claim the vouchers, which contribute towards the cost of building the new network, residents are asked to commit to ordering a full fibre service from a provider of their choice for at least 12 months once the new network is available.

Councillor Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place (Regeneration and Culture), added: "I welcome this fantastic opportunity for Billingley and Tankersley residents and businesses to access funding for gigabit-capable, full fibre broadband.

"I urge them to pledge their vouchers, so they don't miss out on the chance to upgrade and future-proof the broadband networks for years to come in these hard-to-reach rural locations."
