Get in gear for the Barnsley Town Centre Races!

Barnsley is gearing up to host another thrilling elite cycle race in the town centre on Friday 28 July. Barnsley Road Club and Barnsley Council are inviting people to an electrifying evening of action on a closed road course around the centre of town. Barnsley Town Centre Races, which has already been given the green light for three consecutive years of racing, will see the most talented cyclists in the region go wheel to wheel in front of thousands of spectators.

The evening will consist of multiple races free to spectate, offering fun for cycling fans and people of all ages. Individuals and families with children over eight years old are also invited to take part in the free community ride which will mark the start of the races at 4.30pm. People of all abilities have the chance to get on their bikes and ride around the course at their own pace for an hour before the scheduled races begin. To register, visit www.letsride.co.uk/rides/barnsley-community-ride .

Racing action will begin at 5.30pm, starting with the under 12s. The regional ‘category A’ riders will commence their race at 6.40pm as riders challenge each other for regional ranking points. Then at 7.40pm the elite races will begin. This is a fantastic opportunity to see elite riders and future stars hurtling around Barnsley’s town centre roads. Each elite race will last for 50 minutes; the winner will be whoever completes the most laps of the 1km course within that time.

Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “We’re delighted to welcome yet another prestigious cycling event to our borough following on from the successes of Tour de France, the British Cycling National Circuit Race Championships and most recently, Tour de Yorkshire.

“The atmosphere promises to be electric as crowds flock to the centre of our town to see the riders competing. Hopefully, it will inspire many people to get involved with cycling and it may even inspire a future Tour de France winner from our town!”

Barnsley Road Club race organiser, Chris Lawrence said: “Barnsley has a great history of cycling; the road club itself has been in existence since 1924. We’re really looking forward to the first of three fantastic Barnsley Town Centre Races and warmly encourage as many people as possible to join us for the community race and then after as spectators. There will be plenty to do and see on what promises to be a brilliant evening for all ages!”

On the day of the event, road closures will be in place from 3pm. Further details on this will be provided closer to the event. Follow the hashtag #BarnsleyCrit or visit barnsleyroadclub.org.uk for more information.
