Grant to support households with living costs this winter

Update 2 December 2021: the Household Support Grant is now live. Find out more and apply for the grant here.

Cabinet will look to approve the Household Support Grant next Wednesday, which will provide support to vulnerable households this winter.

The grant will support eligible households to buy food, pay essential utility bills, and meet other essential living or housing costs over the winter months.

The Department for Work and Pensions is providing £2.3 million of funding for the grant, alongside £1 million in council funding.

Households that receive Council Tax support will be eligible to apply for the grant. We’ll issue vouchers to those needing support with food and wider essentials, as well as offering financial support to those needing help with fuel and water bills. Households who need support with emergency housing will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Those eligible for support will be able to apply online.

Support for families is also available through the Healthy Holidays programme, which provides free holiday clubs offering healthy food and fun activities for children over the school break.

Cllr Jenny Platts, Cabinet Spokesperson for Adults and Communities, said: “It’s really important that we support households in our borough to be able to buy food, pay essential bills, and meet other living costs.”

“The last 18 months have had a real effect on residents and families across Barnsley, and we welcome funding from the government that, alongside our own funding, will help those households that are struggling.”
