Have your say on climate action in Barnsley

People across Barnsley are invited to share their thoughts and ideas about how we move positively into a net zero carbon future.

There has been lots of attention on climate change in recent weeks due to the COP26 Climate Conference which has been taking place.

The council continues to work closely with partners to understand what needs to happen for the borough to meet its target of becoming net zero carbon by 2045 which was set two years ago.

A key part of this work is hearing the views of Barnsley residents. To help with this, everyone living or working in the borough is invited to take part in a one of our ‘have your say’ sessions, which will be facilitated by the Centre for Sustainable Energy.

We want to find out what the people of Barnsley think about the transition to net zero carbon, and how we can make sure the change a positive one that generates jobs, reduces health inequalities and supports a safe and just society.

Housing is an important area. The government says we must provide 21,524 new homes by 2033. We need to make sure our borough has sustainable, quality housing, so you can live in the right house for you, and that we can heat these homes in a sustainable way.

The online sessions are open to everyone – the content for these sessions will be the same so you only need to attend one. The sessions are interactive workshops with a chance to discuss the topics, they are not drop-in sessions.

We will also be holding two focused events for people with an interest in transport or business. Booking via Eventbrite is essential for all events.

Cllr Chris Lamb, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Transport, said: “Your borough needs you, and I encourage everyone in Barnsley to take this chance to get involved and be part of this important conversation.

“We’re proud of our borough and must look after our local environment and protect it, and our planet, for future generations. Together, we can reduce pollution, minimise waste, and support people to heat and power their homes, cars and businesses with affordable, sustainable energy.

“These sessions will be a chance for you to find out how climate change will affect you and your family, and to share your views and ideas.”
