Barnsley Council has joined in partnership with Age UK Barnsley to organise an Age-Friendly Barnsley event at The Civic, Barnsley on Monday 22 July.
The event which runs from 9.45am to 2.30pm is an opportunity for people to find out what Age Friendly is all about, find out how Barnsley is getting on with being Age Friendly and to be part of making Barnsley a good place to grow old in.
The event builds on work that has already been done across a variety of areas affecting older people, including transport, housing and social participation.
Jane Holliday, CEO Age UK Barnsley, said: “This event provides a great opportunity for members of the public to find out what’s been done so far and be a part of what happens next. Making Barnsley Age Friendly is good for all of us, not just older people.”
Barnsley Council has committed to the town being Age Friendly by signing up to be part of the UK Network of Age-Friendly communities.
Age-Friendly communities foster healthy and active ageing, making it possible for people to continue to stay in their homes, participate in the activities that they value, and contribute to their communities, for as long as possible.
Cllr Jenny Platts, Cabinet Spokesperson for Adults and Communities, said: “I’d encourage anyone, old or young, to get involved in this event and have your say on making Barnsley Age Friendly. You don’t have to have any specific experience or skills, just a passion for making Barnsley a better place to grow old in.”
The event is open to the public. Lunch will be provided, and places are limited. Please contact Age UK Barnsley on 01226 776820 to book your place or if you require any further information.

We’re committed to #ImagineIt by working to make Barnsley a place where people love to live and work, and where they can see a brighter future for themselves and their families.
