Have your say on proposed changes to council tax support

We are currently considering changes to our Council Tax Support Scheme and we want to hear the views of people living across Barnsley.

Our online consultation is now live, giving residents an opportunity to feedback on our proposals for the 2022/23 Council Tax Support Scheme.

With this year’s scheme, government funding has enabled us to offer enhanced financial support to those who need it most.

We want to extend the current scheme into next year, with it now being funded by the council.

As part of our proposals, we’re also considering extending the scheme’s benefits to protect those who are eligible for support from any potential future rise in council tax.

The consultation only takes a few minutes to complete and will be running until 31 October.

Councillor Alan Gardiner, Cabinet Spokesperson for Core Services, said: “We are proud that our Council Tax Support Scheme has been able to offer enhanced support to those that need it most this year. We want to see this level of support remain in place, which is why we are proposing to use council funds to extend our enhanced support.

“I would encourage residents to see what we’re proposing and have their say. This way, we can use your feedback to inform our final plans for next year’s scheme.”

Council tax support is a discount from your council tax bill designed to help working age people on low incomes and benefits. You can find full details of the current Council Tax Support Scheme on our website.
