Help available to empty property owners in Barnsley

Empty properties and the reasons why they remain empty are all very different. Barnsley Council’s empty property team specialise in helping owners find solutions to why their properties are empty.

Over the last year owners of empty homes throughout Barnsley have been supported by the council to let their properties. This has included help with:

  • the council purchasing the property at market value if it has been empty for over six months.
  • information on how the property can be managed through Berneslai homes.
  • handling legal issues including probate.
  • accessing grants and interest-free loans to refurbish the property.

Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “Properties have lots of different reasons why they remain empty. We offer a range of support packages to help as many empty property owners as possible.

“Together with Berneslai Homes, we can consider the purchase and repair of long-term empty houses and even shops to bring them back into use.

“If you own an empty property, please get in touch and find out what help and advice we can provide.”

A recent project the council has helped to turn into a new rented family home was on Doncaster Road in Goldthorpe. The property had been empty for over 12 years and was in need of a full refurbishment.

Mrs D the empty properties owner said: “Without the help of the empty property team I would not have been able to get the property ready for new tenants. I found the prospect of completing the works overwhelming.

“The council and my contractors were brilliant, answering all my concerns at each stage. I remained in control at all times and would recommend any owners of empty properties to contact the team.”

The empty property team will be in Barnsley Library, outside the café on Saturday 28 October, 10am to 1pm holding an empty homes drop-in session. They will be able to provide advice and answer any questions relating to empty properties.
