Barnsley Council is pleased to announce that local poet and journalist Ian McMillan has written a bespoke poem dedicated to the Library @ the Lightbox, which will be showcased at the opening on Saturday 13 July.
The unique poem was inspired by the atmosphere that the Library @ the Lightbox will bring to the town centre, focusing on the distinctive architecture of the building and how this makes the space as a whole a relaxing and inviting place to enjoy.
The verse will be on display within the Library @ the Lightbox, taking pride of place overlooking the open terrace based on the first floor. This will be an excellent piece of artwork to tie the relationship between writing and creativity within the Lightbox, encompassing the statement that this is more than just a library.
Ian McMillan, being a famous son of Barnsley and a freeman of the Borough has brought his literary connections to a special place in the heart of Barnsley that is the Library @ the Lightbox.
Ian handed over the responsibility of being Barnsley’s Poet Laureate to Eloise Unerman in April this year and she will be joining Ian at the opening event to celebrate the occasion.
Ian McMillan said: "I’m very excited to support the new Library @ The Lightbox; it’ll be a shining light for the town and the borough for years to come, a lighthouse guiding us to the safe harbour of language, learning and fun!”
Cllr Jenny Platts, Cabinet Spokesperson for Adults and Communities, said: “We are so grateful that Ian McMillan has taken the time to write a one-off poem highlighting the wonderful space that is our new library.
“The piece brings a new lease of life to the building, and I cannot wait for the residents of Barnsley to see the piece unveiled at the opening on Saturday 13 July, I am sure they will be as impressed and inspired as we are.”
