Mapplewell Library is delighted to welcome children’s poet and author, Joseph Coelho, through their doors as part of the Library Marathon challenge on Wednesday 7 August.
In his campervan, Joseph will begin his mission to visit and sign-up to 70 libraries in 25 days passing through Mapplewell on his inspiring, literary journey. This is to celebrate the inclusive, vital role libraries play in our lives and to encourage as many people as possible to #JoinYourLibrary.
Joseph said: “It was in my local library where I studied for exams with friends, browsed books about beachcombing and imagined living by the sea, bought second-hand encyclopaedias that I’d otherwise never own and where I had my first Saturday job. It was in my library that I got to know and connect with my local community, where I read, studied and wrote.”
Cllr Jenny Platts, Cabinet Spokesperson for Adults and Communities, said: “We are honoured that Joseph will be joining Barnsley Library services to celebrate the wonderful community spaces for learning and discovery that we have. Libraries are a crucial keystone to our borough and I would encourage all residents and families to join us at the event.”
The Library Marathon will be undertaken with the support of CILIP and Libraries Connected with special activities being planned for Libraries Week in October.
Nick Poole, Chief Executive CILIP says, “What a marvellous way to celebrate and promote libraries. We are delighted to support Joseph in his library quest that showcases the important role of libraries in so many people's stories.
“As an avid library supporter and advocate Joseph demonstrates the joy the library can bring and we will be watching and supporting his journey with enthusiasm. We look forward to celebrating with Joseph and libraries across the country during Libraries Week this October.”
Residents are encouraged to go down to Mapplewell Library on Wednesday 7 August at 10am to greet the author and get stuck in on the fun. Follow Joseph’s progress here.
