Keep warm and well this winter

Barnsley Council will be launching its 2017 Warm Homes Campaign with help from National Energy Action (NEA), a charity dedicated to tackling fuel poverty and excess winter deaths on Friday 8 December.

The launch will take place at Barnsley Market’s Meat and Fish entrance and in the Better Barnsley shop from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Here the Housing and Energy team will be joined by partners from around Barnsley offering hints, tips and advice on how to keep warm, stay well and save money this winter. Organisations attending include My Best Life Barnsley, Age UK Barnsley, The Royal Voluntary Service, Berneslai Homes and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

Barnsley Council’s Housing and Energy Team will be on hand helping people to find out if they have the best deal available from their energy supplier. There will also be information on Better Homes Barnsley which offer efficiency measures for homeowners and private tenants including new or replacement oil and gas boilers, cavity wall and loft insulation.

Better Homes Barnsley are currently able to offer a limited number of free gas central heating systems. To be eligible, households must not have a central heating system at home and have an income of less than £21,000 after mortgage or rent costs have been deducted. The scheme is open to anyone who owns or privately rents their home.

Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “We want as many residents as possible to pop in next Friday and find out about the different schemes available to help them save money and keep their homes warm this winter.

“We don’t want residents to feel they have to struggle during the cold weather when there is support available in Barnsley. Our Housing and Energy team will be on hand with information on funding local residents may be entitled to. They will also be able to see how much money could be saved on home energy bills.

"So drop by for a chat and a cuppa next Friday and bring your latest gas and electricity bill along to see if we can help you save money this winter.”
