Latest life-saving defibrillator installed across the borough

The Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Caroline Makinson was delighted to celebrate the installation of a new life-saving defibrillator at the Grove in Royston last week.

This marked the third community public access defibrillator installed in the Royston village as part of a wider borough project. The other defibrillators can be found at the Lifestyle Express, High Street, and the Pavillion at Royston Park. These are the first three defibrillators to be installed as part of the project that has secured funding to provide life-saving defibrillators across the borough.

Barnsley Long Term Heart Support Exercise Groups donated the funding to the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust to place the equipment in areas where there is the greatest need. Additional funding secured by Barnsley Council Ward Alliances has resulted in the provision of at least 22 life-saving defibrillators for the borough, with the first three installed in Royston.

The Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Caroline Makinson, said: “The provision of these community public access defibrillators is crucial for our communities. During a medical emergency, their availability to help people in cardiac arrest will undoubtedly save precious lives.

“We really appreciate the joined-up work with the Barnsley Long Term Exercise Heart Support Group (Barnsley Healthy Hearts), Yorkshire Ambulance Service, along with local electricians A. Coole Electrical, Station Road, Royston, who have given their time freely to ensure we get them installed. A big thank you to everyone involved.”

Over 30,000 people suffer cardiac arrests outside of hospital in the UK every year. The sooner someone can call an ambulance, and the patient can receive CPR and a shock from a defibrillator, the greater their chance of survival. The defibrillators will be securely kept in a locked cabinet, the code to which can be accessed by calling 999.

Virtual training sessions for residents are planned for March and April. If anyone would like to take part and learn how to use this life-saving equipment, please email to express your interest.
