Library@theLightbox set to be the digital flagship for Barnsley libraries

The Library@theLightbox, which is set to open in Spring 2019, will be a welcoming hub for the community, offering state of the art technology, a new sophisticated library and dynamic social space to meet and learn. The Library@theLightbox will be at the heart of the new library service, making sure that we offer modernised Barnsley’s libraries for our communities.

Each floor of the four-storey glazed building will have its very own unique, characterful experience. The meeting place, based on the ground floor offers a flexible space for a range of activities, sharing information, customer service appointments, as well as access to reading and audiobooks, games and interactive technology, to help spark imagination and creativity.

The reading lounge on the first floor offers a dedicated space for children alongside the adult fiction and comfortable seating overlooking the new town square.

The second floor will be the place to study, learn and reflect. With public access to technology, it’s a great space for homework work assignments, college projects and group study. Businesses can benefit from a bookable training suite for up to 20 people with an interactive touchscreen.

The third-floor events space and open roof terrace will offer magnificent views over the town as well as excellent opportunities for functions and events. With an enclosed gallery for 60-100 seating, it provides an ideal opportunity for business meetings and VIP events.

The £5.3 million build is part of a £130 million town centre redevelopment programme to attract visitors and investment in the borough. The Library@theLightbox will be located in the new public square, close to the markets, cinema, retail and leisure facilities.

Councillor Jenny Platts, Spokesperson for communities, said: “The Library@theLightbox will enhance and inspire the lives of our local community as part of the Council’s drive to increase and improve the digital capability.

“It is much more than a library, giving people access to a wide range of services, providing venues for community groups, events, and encouraging our customers to use technology to experience Virtual Reality, programming, music and dance.

“Storytimes will be more interactive with projection and sound systems, children and parents will be transported to another place fully immersing them in the story. New innovative systems will be introduced for the elderly and special needs groups meaning the building will be accessible to all.

“We’re excited that the Library@theLightbox will open next year and I can assure you it’ll be worth the wait.”

The Library@theLightbox, part of the Glass Works scheme, is scheduled for completion in spring 2020, and will provide 26 shops, a 13-screen Cineworld, Superbowl UK and seven restaurants. Along with the refurbished markets, new public realm and up to 500 car parking spaces set within a 3.8-hectare site in the very heart of Barnsley Town Centre.
