St Mary’s Primary in Barnsley welcomed some extra special guests recently, with Little Green Devils arriving all the way from Gloucestershire.
Little Green Devils is a programme delivered by Forest Green Rovers Football Club, who have gained major media coverage and worldwide interest as the only vegan and carbon neutral club on the planet. It’s a totally new approach – introducing a sporting audience to freshly made vegan food, serving 100% vegan food on match days.
The club are now introducing award-winning food to schools, colleges and universities around the country. Children at St Mary’s were shown how Forest Green Rovers have been working on reducing their carbon footprint, and some of the tasty vegan options that are now available in schools.
The visit was organised through Barnsley Schools Catering Service, who provide catering to the school. The service has been exploring options to expand its menu, offering more plant-based products, and improving pupil’s general knowledge on healthy eating, food origin and establishing healthy eating patterns.
The catering team, working with schools, are committed to providing healthy and tasty menu options that will appeal to all tastes, and a variety of dietary demands.
A spokesperson for Barnsley Schools Catering Service said: “It was great to welcome representatives from Forest Green Rovers to speak to one of our schools. The service is always looking at ways to continue to provide healthy, nutritious food, and the Little Green Devils presentation was all about getting to know more about vegan options.
This is a fun way to provide pupils with important messages about healthy, varied diets, but also what we can all be doing to reduce our carbon footprint through food choices.”
