Market traders make extra effort to provide a Merry Christmas for Barnsley

Barnsley’s fantastic market traders are making Christmas extra special this year. They’re keen to exceed customer expectations and will be open for business on both Christmas and New Year’s Eve, even though both fall on a Sunday in 2017. May Day Green, Market Parade and the Meat and Fish Market will open from  8 am to 2 pm, offering Christmas shoppers an extra opportunity to pick up last minute gifts and fresh local produce.

Barnsley Council has been in discussions with traders and representatives from the National Market Traders Federation (NMTF) about opening on two of the busiest shopping days of the year, to accommodate customer demand.

David Barker from Barkers Butchers and a representative of the NMTF said: “The majority of shops within the town centre will be open for business, and as the markets are at the heart of Barnsley we should also be open. We are therefore happy to support the market's management and trade on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Although we don’t usually trade on Sunday’s we want to support the rest of the town centre and be there for our customers. The atmosphere of the market adds to the rest of the town centre, especially in the festive season and it’s an opportunity for us to trade for an extra day.”

Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, Councillor Roy Miller said:We’re really pleased that the traders are supporting this. Opening the market on two of the most important shopping days of the year will ensure that we are meeting customer demand and expectation. We will continue to work with traders to promote and plan the operational detail necessary to trade on Christmas and New Years Eve.”
