New foot and cycle bridge opened in Penny Pie Park

The new foot and cycle bridge in Penny Pie Park was officially opened earlier today, Monday 22 May.

An opening ceremony took place with representatives from the council; CR Reynolds, the contractor for the project; Network Rail; St Mary’s Primary School and Horizon Community College.

Construction on-site began in November 2022 and the completion of the project complements and enhances the delivery of the A628 Dodworth Road and Broadway Junction Improvement scheme, which is vital to support our future business and housing growth plans, and improve access to our new town centre.

The bridge will improve connectivity between Dodworth and Pogmoor, which were previously separated by the Sheffield – Huddersfield railway line, as well as providing a safe crossing point for pedestrians, particularly the students of Horizon Community College.

It will also help with addressing the Network Rail recorded incidents of trespassing on the line, improving safety for children.

Councillor Sir Stephen Houghton CBE, Leader of Barnsley Council, said: “We’re thrilled to see the new foot and cycle bridge open in Penny Pie Park, which we hope will benefit the local community immensely.

“This is our latest investment into supporting active travel by providing a safe route for people to either walk or cycle on. Adding to the new, improved park facilities which opened last year, Penny Pie Park is now an excellent outdoor space for our residents to enjoy.

“I’d like to thank residents in the area for their patience and understanding throughout the construction process and the contractor, CR Reynolds, who have helped us to deliver this project with funding from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.”
