New primary school consultation to begin in January

In January, a consultation will be undertaken to gain feedback and opinions on the development and key features of a new primary school in the Barugh Green and Higham area of Barnsley. The new primary school is being created to meet future school place need, due to the 1,700 homes arising from the MU1 development. The consultation will take place from Monday 4 January to Friday 12 February 2021.

The proposed primary school will meet future school place need and will be created in addition to the schools in the area; no existing schools will be replaced. The new primary school will also provide more parental choice in the local area and provide a community space for all to utilise and enjoy. The land and building costs for the school will be secured via housing developer contributions.

This non-statutory consultation seeks views about what should be the key features of the new school so that Barnsley Council can use this to identify a suitable multi-academy trust to run the school. The feedback from the consultation will also be included in the notification to the Department for Education.

There will be two virtual consultation sessions held on Wednesday 20 January at 2.30pm and Thursday 28 January at 6.30pm, to give interested parties the opportunity to ask questions. More details on signing up to the sessions will be provided in January.

Cllr Margaret Bruff, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children’s Services, said: “We need to make sure that a primary school is available to provide sufficient school places at the right time. This consultation gives local people the chance to have their say on what they think the schools’ key features should be. This will help us when choosing a suitable multi-academy trust to run the school.

“I’d encourage families, school staff in the local area, early years providers and any interested residents to take part in the consultation. From Monday 4 January, please visit to have your say.”

The consultation will be available online, with the survey link shared on and Barnsley Council Facebook and Barnsley Council Twitter pages from Monday 4 January. If they don’t have any digital access, residents can request a hard copy of the consultation via email or phone (01226) 773555 from Monday 4 January.
