Together with not-for-profit organisation Affinity 2020 CIC, we’re launching the Tiny Tots scheme. It launches on Thursday 16 September and is for new parents up to 25 years. The scheme will provide parents with practical, hands-on help with bonding, development and getting ready for school. It'll run from September to December this year.
The scheme is funded thanks to a successful bid to Police Crime Commissioner funding. The sessions will run every Thursday evening from 5.30-7pm at Kendray and Worsbrough Family Centre. Although it would be best for parents to take place from the start, you can join in part-way through the scheme.
The first half of the scheme will provide practical tips on bonding, ways to make your child feel safe at home, and activities for building skills. The second half of the scheme will focus on getting ready for school. There’ll also be a WhatsApp support group set up, which we will hand over to the group after December so they can continue supporting each other.
The scheme will support around eight families in Barnsley.
Cllr Trevor Cave, Cabinet spokesperson for Children’s Services, said: “We want to provide support for young new parents in a welcoming and supportive environment. It’s about helping our young people learn their own parenting style, giving them the knowledge and skills to parent in their own best way. We hope that this scheme will help new parents grow in confidence and give their little ones the best start in life.
“We particularly want to work with new parents who are leaving the care of the local authority, or who are care experienced in any way.”
Charlotte Elliot, CEO of Affinity 2020 CIC, said: "Affinity is really looking forward to working in partnership with Barnsley Council. Tiny Tots College is an innovative service which the council have embraced for their wonderful young parents. We are looking forward to meeting all the families."
If you’re a new parent aged 25 or under and want to take part, get in touch by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 07595 397 859. We particularly encourage care leavers who want to start a family or who are new parents to get involved.
