Online tickets for the “Luminarium”, a spectacular walk-through art experience by UK-based Architects of Air are sold out.
The impressive structure will arrive at Market Gate Car Park in Barnsley on Thursday, 21 September and can be explored by the public until Sunday, 24 September.
With demand to attend the event high visitors are being advised that there will be some availability to purchase tickets on the day, but due to its popularity delays are expected and entry is not guaranteed.
Designed to generate a feeling of wonder at the beauty of light and color the “Luminarium’ is a treat for the senses. Special plastic allows sunlight to pass through the installation, creating vibrant color which responds to the changing atmosphere outside.
Alongside the larger structure Pentalum, will be an additional space, Arborica. This second structure is smaller and will host a series of public and educational events.
These include inflatable structures workshops and masterclasses which will be delivered by international artists from Architects of Air, the producers of Luminarium. Alan Parkinson, who founded the company in 1985, will be joined by Dutch Architect Eric Schrijver to share their skills in designing and making inflatable structures with local students and artists. Alan and Eric will also be giving a free public talk about Architects of Air and Luminarium in Arborica on Friday, 22 September at 5.30pm.
A film about Action Space will be shown on Saturday 23 September at 5.30pm. This pioneering company was one of the first in the UK to work with inflatable structures in community settings, and established Action Space Mobile in Barnsley in the 1980s.
Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “We are delighted that the ‘Luminarium’ is arriving to Barnsley. Although online tickets have sold out there will still be opportunity to buy limited tickets on the day. There will be lots to do in the town centre over the weekend, keep your eyes peeled for a large inflatable spider that will be making a special appearance! With discounts available in some shops and a family fun day to mark the opening of Experience Barnsley and the Cooper Gallery’s Egypt exhibitions it will be a fun filled weekend in Barnsley.”
This programme has been made possible by Lottery funding through Arts Council England as part of a Research and Development grant. Barnsley Council is hoping to bring more exciting and innovative inflatable artworks to the Borough in the future.
