‘Our Futures Now – Barnsley the place of possibilities’ book celebrates the stories from Barnsley people

Around 50 individuals from Barnsley Council, partners and local poets have come together to tell stories and inspire people to imagine the future of Barnsley – the place of possibilities.

Our Futures Now book celebrates the stories that come straight from the heart of real people, many who live and are passionate about Barnsley. Many council workers build on the resilience shown during the pandemic, and some stories talk about the very real and not too distant future.

To help you reflect and imagine the future you want to see, you will be given a chance to write your very own personal story for the book during workshops that are coming next year. The book will be taken on a journey to libraries across the borough in January 2022. We hope the stories will help everyone who lives, works and visits Barnsley to join together and focus on achieving Barnsley’s vision and ambitions.

Sarah Norman, Chief Executive of Barnsley Council, said: “The personal stories in this book are designed to bring Barnsley’s vision to life and influence positive change in our council and in Barnsley. These inspirational stories detail what people want to see through real scenarios and imagined moments. There are glimpses of the future, what’s special and what’s at the heart of our borough: people who are proud, confident, and determined.

“I would like to thank all of our contributors, who have inspired us and helped imagine Barnsley 2030 in such lovely detail. Their focus on the future, and commitment to making the vision for Barnsley 2030 real, shines out. Their ideas, personal reflections, and mindset shifts make this book special.”

“I hope that the story collection will grow on the journey and the book will be a marker for us to see what did change. We’ll come back to it again and again over the years.”

Cllr Sir Steve Houghton CBE, Leader of Barnsley Council, said: “Never has there been a book as ambitious as this one. It’s right that it’s big and bold.

“When I was asked which bit of the vision for Barnsley most resonated with me, I said… changing the culture was key, we have to believe Barnsley is a place where we can all make the things happen that are most important to us, and my story is about confidence and ambition.

“There will be challenges on our way to 2030, there always are, but by acknowledging them, we can face them together. It’s so important that people can see things changing already, which has been made possible by the great new Glass Works in the town centre and other developments planned across the borough.

“This is a book by Barnsley people for Barnsley people, and I hope as many people as possible take the opportunity to enjoy it and add their story as it makes its journey across Barnsley.”

Dawn Reeves, Director of Shared Press (Independent Publishers.), said: “This is a special book, specific about what magical place Barnsley will be like in the future. As you read through it, the confidence and determination to turn the vision into reality builds, you sense the possibilities.

“It’s been fantastic working with people in Barnsley, their creativity and commitment to the place shines through. Shared Press are delighted to publish Our Futures Now. The hand-made version of the book is a stunning work of art, and we’re proud of our largest ever book.”
