Over 2,200 families were supported over half-term with Healthy Holidays

Our Healthy Holidays programme was back over the May half-term, with Good Food Boxes provided to 2,228 families across Barnsley.

Healthy Holidays makes sure that children eligible for free school meals have access to food and activities over the holidays. Working with our partners, we provided quality Good Food Boxes to families across the borough, each containing enough food to cover a child’s lunches for the holidays.

As part of the programme, 2,575 Good Food Boxes were provided to 2,228 families in Barnsley. Overall, they helped to cover the lunches of 4,196 children across the borough.

Boxes contained fresh fruit and veg, cupboard essentials, and fun holiday activities with our activity booklet. They were packed by 100 fantastic volunteers, who dedicated 644 volunteer hours to the programme, and packed almost 120,000 items. The boxes were delivered to families’ homes by our partners Berneslai Homes and Wates.

As well as the boxes, we also encouraged families to keep active over the holidays on our Facebook and Twitter pages, where we shared fun activities each day of the holidays. We shared daily challenges, fun activities to do at home, and information about what’s on across the borough.

Plans are already underway for the Healthy Holidays summer programme. Funded by the Department for Education, this will see holiday clubs in place across the borough to support families in giving children access to food and activities.

Cllr Jenny Platts, Cabinet Spokesperson for Communities, said: “We’re really pleased that we’ve been able to offer our Good Food Boxes to families again. The Healthy Holidays programme means we can support those families who might need extra help in accessing food and activities to keep healthy, and it’s fantastic that we’ve been able to provide boxes to over 2,500 families across the borough.”

“Once again, the programme just goes to show what we can achieve when we work together. The volunteers involved did a fantastic job to pack thousands of boxes, and our own teams and partners really made sure the programme was a success. My thanks go out to everyone who supported.”
