School workshops are back at Barnsley Museums, with lots more on offer.
Although physical trips were put on hold due to Covid restrictions, the team are now welcoming pupils back to their five fantastic attractions which include Experience Barnsley Museums and Discovery Centre, The Cooper Gallery, Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens, Worsbrough Mill and Elsecar Heritage Centre. Visits are also available to book at partnering organisation Wentworth Castle Gardens.
As well as on site visits schools can book outreach sessions, loan boxes and virtual experiences, all offering a fascinating insight into key moments in history, linked to the curriculum.
New sessions and experiences have been developed around key topics which include the Romans, Vikings, Toys, the Victorians and WW2.
Covid secure measures have been put in place such as extra ventilation, enhanced cleaning and hand washing to ensure a safe visit.
Teachers have said about the sessions:
“Year 7 students had a fantastic day at Barnsley Museums for a Mining Experience and were able to learn all about the history of the town.”
“The session supported the children in their understanding of the objects and therefore their ability to add the information into their role play. It enabled a rich vocabulary to be added to their narratives and we saw the level of understanding that the children had achieved from the session through their play.”
Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place (Regeneration and Culture) said: “There has been a great response to the new and exciting virtual sessions that the Barnsley Museums Learning team offered during Covid, but they are looking forward to welcoming schools from far and wide back to our stunning historic locations. With lots of new sessions on offer, children of all ages will be transported back in time making new discoveries on the way.”
