Volunteers from across Barnsley came together for the latest town centre clean-up event on Wednesday 30 October.
A team of 17 volunteers from Henry Boot Construction, the Alhambra Shopping Centre and the council's Safer Neighbourhood Service, Parks Services and Neighbourhood Services participated in the event at the rear of the Alhambra and in the surrounding underpasses.
Two large shrub beds (approx. 160m²) were picked of litter, weeded, had the shrubbery cut back and the trees pruned.
In total, 25 black bags were filled with green waste, a further four bags were filled with general litter and around 3m³ of tree waste was generated. The waste was collected by Neighbourhood Services and will be recycled accordingly.
Neighbourhood Services brought a mechanical sweeper with them and swept the underpasses and open spaces.
Three benches were cleaned and sanded down in preparation for repainting when drier weather arrives.
Safer Neighbourhood Service staff attended and removed graffiti and stickers from two out of the three underpasses and cleaned them using a high-pressure water jet-washer. The third underpass will be cleaned at a future date.
Councillor Jenny Platts, Cabinet spokesperson for Communities, said: "I would like to say a big thank you to all of the volunteers who braved the weather and donated their time to make our town centre a cleaner, better place.
"The area looks much better thanks to their hard work and I would encourage more people and local businesses to sign up for the next event and give some of their time to make a positive impact on the local environment."
Details of the next clean-up event will be circulated soon and the council remain keen for town centre businesses to get involved.
