The Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Sarah-Jane Tattersall, is delighted to invite you and your family to join her at Barnsley’s annual Civic Carol service on Thursday 15 December at St Mary's Parish Church, Church Street, Barnsley.
The service starts at 4pm, but we kindly ask that attendees arrive at 3.45pm to make sure everyone is seated before the civic party arrive. The traditional carol service will be led by Fr. Jay Lawrence Hewitt SSC, the Assistant Curate of St Mary’s, accompanied by the Mayor's Chaplain, Fr. Peter Needham.
Barnsley’s Civic Carol service is a long-standing tradition in Barnsley and provides a wonderful opportunity for families to take a break from the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping and preparation to reflect on the year and get into the true spirit of Christmas with traditional carols.
You will also be treated to hymns performed by the fabulous Civic Choir - a group of choristers from across the borough coming together, especially for the service. The fabulous Barnsley Metropolitan Band will also be performing and accompanying some of the traditional carols you will have the opportunity to sing.
The Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Sarah-Jane Tattersall, said: "I’m really looking forward to Barnsley’s Civic Carol service and feel truly honoured to be part of it as Barnsley’s Mayor. It's such a lovely opportunity to bring our residents and communities together under one roof - and then raise it with some traditional festive carols.
“This year’s carol service is particularly special as it’s the first one we have been able to hold face-to-face since before the pandemic. So, it also represents unity and strength as we are able to come together once more to share such a wonderful time of year.
“We hope to see the church packed with families taking a break from wrapping presents to reflect and celebrate before the big day itself. I'd also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very healthy, happy Christmas and a very happy 2023."
The service is open to one and all - so please spread the word among family and friends. For more information, call the Mayor's office on 01226 773804.
