Transforming Honeywell: Joining Forces for a Safer Community

Residents of Honeywell have witnessed significant improvements in their neighbourhood, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Safer Neighbourhoods Team,  South Yorkshire Police and the community.

Responding to concerns about antisocial behaviour, drug-related issues, and overall safety, the initiative has not only addressed immediate challenges but also fostered a sense of community and pride among local residents. The Joining Forces initiative, developed as a preventative measure to nip the risk posed to communities by crime and antisocial behaviour in the bud, has empowered residents to take an active role in improving their environment.

Reports of safety concerns inspired swift action, resulting in a series of impactful measures. Highlights of the work include the launch of a new community kitchen providing a welcoming space for residents to connect and support each other, programs around Crimestoppers and Neighbourhood Watch to enhance vigilance and reporting, and collaborative events featuring organisations like the Territorial Army, Andy Man’s Club, and How’s Thi Ticker. A cleanup in the Fleets area was one of the standout achievements, along with Community Hero Day, an event celebrating the dedication of 30 local heroes whose contributions have significantly improved the neighbourhood.

The Safer Neighbourhoods Team and South Yorkshire Police have implemented several ongoing measures to sustain the improvements, including victim and witness support services to ensure residents feel protected and heard, regular neighbourhood patrols and walkarounds to maintain visibility and deter crime, removal of graffiti to create a cleaner, more inviting environment, and action through Operation Duxford targeting specific crime hotspots.

Cllr Wendy Cain commended the remarkable progress, stating: “The improvements we’ve seen in Honeywell are a testament to the power of collaboration. The dedication of the Safer Neighbourhoods Team, South Yorkshire Police, and especially the residents has created a safer, more vibrant community. This work highlights the importance of listening to local concerns and acting decisively to address them. I’m proud of everyone involved and look forward to seeing this momentum continue.”

The establishment of a resident-led community group has been a cornerstone of this initiative. By fostering ongoing dialogue and collaboration, the group ensures that residents’ voices remain at the heart of decision-making. This collective effort has made Honeywell a better place to live, with stronger connections and a renewed sense of community spirit.
