Throughout May 2022, we will be celebrating all of the amazing opportunities there are in Barnsley to get up, get out and walk.
Barnsley Walking Festival, which will be running from 1 to 31 May, is an opportunity for people to be active and walk more by joining in with a month-long programme of free, organised walking activities, from friendly walking groups to walking sports.
As part of National Walking Month 2022, there are over 100 activities on offer that can be viewed on the festival's webpage - there's something for everyone.
The organised walking activities and walking sports are great as you will not only get in some active minutes, but will also meet new people, and who knows – maybe even friends for life. But if you're not feeling like joining one of the activities, it's alright, just take your friends or family and have a walk around your local area – every minute counts!
Julia Burrows, Director of Public Health, said: "Walking is one of the easiest ways of incorporating physical activity in your day-to-day life, and it has numerous benefits for your mental and physical wellbeing.
"Barnsley has many beautiful places to explore by foot, which some might be right on your doorstep, including many parks, heritage sites and a well-developed Trans Pennine Trail network.
"Many local groups and organisations run free walks throughout the year, so find the one that works for you and join in our celebration this May."
