In recognition that winter months will be a challenge for some residents, Barnsley Council will be providing a dedicated winter welfare support service.
Over the last 12 months, the council’s Covid support service advisors have been contacting people who test positive for COVID-19 to support them through their isolation by providing them with information on financial support as well as wellbeing advice.
This service will now be expanded to include advice on:
- local support – Warm Homes; food banks; falls prevention health coaches; household support fund
- financial aid information and application
- flu and winter illnesses
Information packs about activities in local areas will also be created and handed out via Area Teams.
As well as giving advice, the service will also provide a listening and supportive ear, and information gathered on what winter is like for our most vulnerable people will help inform how council services are delivered.
As well as people who have tested positive for COVID-19, the calls will be made to people who have been identified as being at higher risk using a range of criteria, including age, benefits received, and disability.
The winter welfare support service will contact people by phone from the number 01226 774666 and will not ask for details such as bank information.
