World Mental Health Day 2017

Workplace wellbeing is the theme for this year’s World Mental Health awareness day which lands on Tuesday 10 October. World Mental Health Day takes place annually and is an opportunity to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and promote efforts in support of mental health.

During our adult lives, a large proportion of our time is spent at work. Our experience in the workplace is one of the factors determining our overall wellbeing.  In England, one in six people report experiencing a common mental health problem (such as anxiety and depression) in any given week.

Employers and managers who put in place workplace initiatives to promote mental health and to support employees who have mental disorders see gains not only in the health of their employees but also in their productivity at work. A negative working environment, on the other hand, may lead to physical and mental health problems, harmful use of substances or alcohol and lost productivity.

Cllr Margaret Bruff, Cabinet Spokesperson for People (Safeguarding), said: “just raising the awareness of mental health every year contributes to breaking down negative stereotypes around mental health.

“Mental health can affect anyone and I encourage all Barnsley employers to ask themselves if they could do more to support mental health at work for their employees? Not only will it allow people to be happier whilst they live and work, employees who are supported with mental health at work initiatives are proven to have increased productivity.”

Further information and tips for support and advice can be found by contacting Rotherham and Barnsley Mind who are holding a drop-in event on the day as an opportunity to meet the team and find out about our services.
