This course is for anyone interested in learning BSL for personal, professional or social reasons, whether you're hearing impaired or not.

Length of course

20 hrs, normally two hours a week over ten weeks, following on from a First Steps course.

  • Alphabet
  • Finger spelling
  • Introduction to time and numbers
  • Family and people in everyday life
  • Map reading and directions
  • The weather

Give us a call or come to one of our enrolment sessions during September or watch out for our taster courses which take place across the borough and are advertised throughout the year. 

What you can do next


You could carry on to the next level of our programme – Signature Level One – and eventually to Signature Level Two.


Our Sign Language pathway leads to qualification that can be used by learners who want to become interpreters or work in a supportive role in schools or social services.
