Adult Skills and Community Learning

This course is for anyone interested in learning BSL for personal, professional or social reasons, whether you're hearing impaired or not.

See our course listing for British Sign Language for details of the days, times, locations and fees for these courses.

Length of course

36 weeks, two hours per week.

Course content

You'll complete a portfolio of work which will be used as evidence for accreditation. This course is, in practice, the first year of a two year course leading to a Signature Level Two qualification.

There are three units:

  • communicating with deaf people using British Sign Language
  • production of BSL
  • reception of BSL

By the end of the course, you'll understand the principles of BSL grammar and be able to receive and understand communication in the form of an account or story.

Entry requirements

You should have completed a BSL Signature Level One course.

Course fees

If you're under 24, or receive certain benefits, you may be entitled to a fee reduction or remission. See our information about paying for a course for details.

How to apply

Come to one of our enrolment sessions during September or watch out for our taster courses that we hold across the borough and advertise throughout the year.

What you can do next

You could carry on to the next level of our programme, Signature Level Two, with us, and then to level 3 with another provider, such as Doncaster College for the Deaf.

Our Sign Language pathway leads to qualifications that can be used by learners who wish to become interpreters or work in a supportive role in schools or social services.
