English courses

These courses are suitable for learners for whom English is their second language. We provide a friendly and supportive environment to learn, helping you to develop your reading, writing speaking and listening skills.  We offer ESOL Skills for Life courses and ESOL for Work courses, to help you to progress or get into work.

Course content

You'll improve your English by developing your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, at a level appropriate for your individual ability.

This course will support you in communicating effectively within the community, it could also prepare you for work or even provide you with a stepping stone towards further education.

Our ESOL courses are tailored according to your ability, and courses are flexible as they give you the opportunity to develop all four skills or the desired skill/skills you wish to develop.

Throughout the course learners will focus on:

  • grammar
  • spelling
  • punctuation
  • vocabulary
  • study skills
  • skills for work

Learners will also study topics that are relevant and important for them. 

Topics include:

  • me and my health
  • British culture
  • communication at work
  • travel and transport
  • hobbies and interests
  • finding a job
  • sport and keeping fit

Course options

ESOL speaking and listening/reading/writing

  • ESOL speaking and listening (from September 2020)
  • ESOL reading (from January 2021)
  • ESOL writing (from April 2021)

During these courses:

  • You will attend two classes per week with a specialist ESOL tutor.
  • Classes are either morning or afternoon.
  • There are face to face sessions for the beginner levels and a mix of face to face and online teaching for higher levels.
  • All learners will have access to an online virtual learning environment, Edmodo.
  • There will be at least one hour of homework per week.

ESOL Certificate

This full year course (September 2020 to July 2021) includes speaking, listening, reading and writing.

  • You will attend one class per week, with a specialist ESOL tutor. 
  • ESOL Certificate classes are held in the evening. 
  • There will be a mix of face to face and online teaching. 
  • All learners will have access to an online virtual learning environment, Edmodo. 
  • There will be at least one hour of homework per week.

ESOL for Work

We offer two ESOL for Work courses: a beginner course at Entry 1-2 and a higher level course at Entry 3- Level 1. These courses are 12 weeks long, and you will study once per week.

We study:

  • Applying for jobs
  • Writing a CV
  • Writing a covering letter
  • Preparing for job interviews
  • Searching for jobs online

The Entry 1-2 course is at Wellington House, and the Entry 3- Level 1 course is online.

The ESOL for work courses are free if you receive certain benefits, and are looking for work. If you want to progress in your career, find a new job or improve your employability, get in touch!
