Adult Skills and Community Learning

This qualification is suitable for learners who want:

  • a formal GCSE English qualification
  • to demonstrate your English skills on a CV
  • to progress on to further or higher education

For learners for whom English is their second language, our English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) courses may also be suitable.

Length of course

The course runs for 30 weeks. You'll attend once a week for 3 hours and complete at least 3 hours homework each week.

Course content

You'll develop your English skills in classroom activities and through homework tasks and be expected to apply them to solve real life problems.

At the end of the year, you'll sit two exams (fiction and non-fiction papers). You'll also be asked to deliver a presentation.

Entry requirements

You should already be working at a high level 2 standard and have completed a level 2 functional English qualification. 

Course fees

GCSE English courses are free for anyone who doesn't have GCSE English A*-C or 4-9.

How to apply

You need to book an appointment for a pre-course assessment before you can start the course, to make sure it's suitable for your needs.

At the appointment you'll be able to discuss your needs with one of our tutors and will also complete an English assessment. Depending on your ability the assessment can take 2 to 3 hours to complete.
