Adult Skills and Community Learning

This course is for you if:

  • you already have attended a level 1 or below course
  • you have had a significant break from or disjointed experience of education
  • you wish to work in the health and social care sector but need a broad grounding in the subject
  • you need an opportunity to develop more general workplace skills before applying for work and higher level study.

The course will provide you with a range of introductory skills; as well as core knowledge; relevant to health and social care. It will also provide you with generic employability skills which are needed both in the health and social care sector and across other sectors.

Mandatory units include:

  • Duty of Care in health and social care
  • Communication in health and social care
  • Equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings

Optional units include:

  • Knowledge and skills relevant to different job roles in the sector (such as disability awareness, first aid, food safety)
  • Generic employability skills (such as leadership skills and setting and meeting targets at work).

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but you will need a good standard of English (working at level 1 or above) and the ability to learn about technical language.

Course details

This course is delivered in three ways:

Classroom based

  • 10 weeks of 3 hours a week, plus assignment tasks at home

Online delivery

  • 10 weeks.  1 x 1.5 hour online session plus individual tutor interactions
  • 60  - 120 minutes of homework tasks to be completed each week
  • Individual tutor interactions as needed

Distance learning

  • Individual workbooks and tasks posted each week with telephone/ text/ email support from a tutor.

What do you need?

  • You will need a notepad and pen and access to a phone for all courses

  • For classroom based courses you will also need access to email and the internet

  • For online courses, you will need a device which has a webcam and sound and is able to access the following apps: Edmodo, Cisco Webex and Kahoot
