Course content

Our Getting Started course will enable and support you to develop digital skills. Whether they are needed to prepare you for further study, work and everyday life.

This course is delivered face to face in a classroom environment. It will give you an overview of what digital skills are and how they are used in everyday life. It also covers the importance of keeping yourself safe online.

The Getting Started courses will help you decide whether the digital pathway is for you. They're also useful if you've not been in a learning environment before.

You'll have time to ask questions, meet our tutors and then leave with dates for your next steps in increasing your digital skills.

This course will enable you to:

Develop essential digital skills necessary to access online learning

  • Turn on a computer and close it down securely 
  • Access the learning platform and be able to navigate the class notebook
  • Access Outlook emails
  • Recognise safe links in emails to access online learning platforms

Use your digital skills safely and responsibly

  • Understand an internet user policy and what could happen if this wasn’t followed
  • Access a web-based learning platform (Teams) using a password and log out
  • Change a password to a more secure one

Use your digital skills to complete work related tasks

  • Understand cloud based storage and local storage
  • Create a shared folder and document

Use an online platform to

  • Access documents and save to your OneDrive
  • Access the digital skills assessment to determine the pathway for your progression.

You'll also develop the skills for work:

  • Work as part of a team, sharing ideas and motivating peers to complete a task
  • Have a positive attitude to plan your own work and complete it effectively within a timeframe
  • Be a good listener and follow instructions accurately
  • Be resilient and have the ability to stick with a task, even if things don’t go to plan, and learn from setbacks
  • Literacy and numeracy skills will be supported throughout the course

Course delivery 

  • 2 x 3 hours sessions per week over two weeks.
  • Learning will take place in a classroom – face to face delivery in an ICT Suite. PC's and access to tablet devices during delivery of the course are available. We encourage you to bring your own device to be able practice your digital skills though this is not essential.
  • Our learning platform uses Microsoft Office 365 and we will support you to set up your free account on course.

What do you need?

  • A mobile phone – does not need credit, but must accept text messages. This will be used to verify your free Office 365 account
  • Folder, paper or notebook and pen
  • Time - at least 30 minutes a week to complete tasks set during each session
  • To attend all four sessions

Entry requirements

You'll have already completed the following with Adult Skills and Community Learning:

  • Information Advice and Guidance and initial assessment on the BKSB Software

The level that you study will be determined by your initial assessment results. 

Course fees

This course is free to all learners over 19 years old.
