Adult Skills and Community Learning

This course is for learners who want a progression course into employment in children’s pre-school education, or who are already working and need a qualification at level 3.

It covers the age range from birth to seven years and includes a mandatory unit and optional units based on your knowledge and skills. 

Topics covered include child development, health and safety, the foundation stage curriculum, safeguarding, personal development, and many others relevant to working with young children.

Entry requirements

You need to be at least 19 years of age and already working at or around level 2 in English and maths.

You will also need 6 months’ recent experience in a relevant setting and preferably a level 2 qualification in a related subject.

A DBS check is required for this course.

Course details

This course is delivered in three ways:

Classroom based

  • 54 weeks of 4 hours a week

Online delivery

  • 54 weeks.  1 x 2 hour online session plus individual tutor interactions
  • 60  - 120 minutes of homework tasks to be completed each week
  • Individual tutor interactions as needed

Distance learning

  • Individual workbooks and tasks posted each week with telephone/ text/ email support from a tutor.

Work in a real work environment

You'll need to be working, volunteering, or on a practical placement, as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills.

If you have extensive experience and are currently working in a paid or voluntary capacity in early years, you also have access to an assessed only route where class attendance is not required.

If you're under 24 and don't have a full Level 2 qualification, or if you're on certain benefits, you may get a fee reduction or remission.

If you're over 19 you can also access the advanced learner loans facility.
