Adult Skills and Community Learning

This course is suitable if you are considering a career in caring for children. It could also support you with re-engaging with learning and break down barriers to you entering the childcare workforce.  It is a good qualification for people not yet ready for a full vocational course but who want to practice their study skills at level 2.

It encourages an understanding of the knowledge and the skills needed to care for young children. It covers children’s growth, learning and development. There are also units to help with self-development.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but you will need a good standard of English, working at least at level 1 and an ability to learn understand technical language.

Course details

This course is delivered in three ways:

Classroom based

  • 10 weeks of 3 hours a week, plus minor homework tasks at home.

Online delivery

  • 10 weeks.  1 x 1.5 hour online session plus individual tutor interactions
  • 60  - 120 minutes of homework tasks to be completed each week
  • Individual tutor interactions as needed

Distance learning

  • Individual workbooks and tasks posted each week with telephone/ text/ email support from a tutor.

What do you need?

  • You will need a notepad and pen and access to a phone for all courses

  • For classroom based courses you will also need access to email and the internet

  • For online courses, you will need a device which has a webcam and sound and is able to access the following apps: Edmodo, Cisco Webex and Kahoot

How to apply

You need to book an appointment for a pre-course assessment before you can start the course.

You will have a 1-1 appointment with an information advice and guidance tutor and complete a short question booklet. You will then be able to make a good choice if it is the right course for you.
