Adult Skills and Community Learning

This course is for learners who are looking for a first qualification into employment in children’s services. This includes pre-school education or social care.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. You must be at least 19 years of age and have, or be working towards, English at level 1.

Length of course

3.5 hours a week plus six hours a week in a placement, for one year.

Course content

The course covers the age range from birth to seven years. It includes a mandatory unit plus optional units.

Topics covered include child development, health and safety, foundation stage curriculum, safeguarding and personal development. There are many others relevant to working with young children.

Work in a real work environment

You'll need to be working, volunteering or on a practical placement. This is because you need to show both knowledge and skills.

Course fees

The cost of the course is £685.

If you're under 23 and don't have a full level 2 qualification, or you receive certain aid, you may be able to get a fee reduction or remission.
