Course content 

This course will support you to look at your career options for working with children. We'll work with you to identify your career goals and routes to achieving them.

The course will provide you with information relating to working with children in different early years provisions. It will include learning about what is needed for the roles of the Early Years Practitioner and Teaching Assistant. Exploring these roles will allow you to make informed decisions about your own career path.

This course is a great introduction back into learning and education. Its ideal if you want to know more about the roles of the Early Years Practitioner and Teaching Assistant. It can also help if you are not sure which route to take. Successful completion of the course will also mean you could gain the Level 1 Award in Employability Skills. This will start you on your journey in a career in working with children.

This course will enable you to:

Be able to explore different career options in caring for children, including:

  • The skills and qualities needed to work with children.
  • Explore how your own skills and qualities can be transferred to working with children.

Be able to assess career options in childcare:

  • Find roles within childcare that match your skills, qualities and abilities.
  • Explore routes to further develop your skills, qualities and education.

Plan goals for your career within childcare:

  • Discover what you want to achieve in relation to your career goals.
  • Find the career route that best suits you.
  • Decide what you will do next in relation to your career. Including which course is best for you and what your next steps are.

You'll also develop the following skills for work:

  • Work as part of a team, sharing your ideas and experience to complete tasks
  • Have a positive attitude to plan your own work and complete it within a timeframe.
  • Be a good listener and follow instructions.
  • Be able to adapt the way you work when things change, or you need to switch to a different task quickly.
  • Be resilient and have the ability to stick with a task. Learn from setbacks if things don't go to plan.
  • Literacy, numeracy and digital skills will be embedded throughout the course.

Course delivery 

Classroom based delivery 

  • 15 hours spread over five or seven weeks. One session per week face to face in a classroom.
  • Solo and group activities throughout the course.
  • Some solo working will be needed after each session.
  • Tutor support available on Teams for Education.

What you need

  • Paper or notebook and pen.
  • Time - at least 30 minutes a week, in additional to class time, to complete tasks set during each session.
  • To attend all sessions.

Entry requirements 

You should have a desire to want to work with children or want to find out more about working in this sector.

Course fees

This course is free to all learners.

How to apply

Progression

Passing the course will enable you to progress your chosen career in working with children and enrol on a vocational course leading to:

  • Level 1 award in an introduction to early years settings
  • Level 2 diploma for the early years practitioner which meets the DfE level 2 full and relevant criteria for a level 2 early years practitioner in the workforce
  • Level 2 certificate in supporting teaching and learning

You'll also have the opportunity to improve your English, maths and digital skills on other courses.
