Adult Skills and Community Learning

This course is for learners who are looking for a first qualification into employment in children’s pre-school education or social care.

Length of course

3.5 hours a week plus 6 hours a week in a placement, for one year

Course content

The course covers the age range from birth to 7 years and includes a mandatory unit plus optional units.

Topics covered include child development, health and safety, the foundation stage curriculum, safeguarding, personal development and many others relevant to working with young children.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but you must be at least 19 years of age and have, or be working towards, English at level 1.

Work in a real work environment

You'll need to be working, volunteering or on a practical placement,as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills.

Course fees

The cost of the course is £685.

If you're under 23 and don't have a full level 2 qualification, or you receive certain benefits, you may be entitled to a fee reduction or remission.

How to apply 

You'll need to book an appointment to attend an information session with a tutor before you can start the course to make sure it's the right one for you.

Sessions take place at Wellington House in Barnsley town centre and last about 30 minutes.
