Adult Skills and Community Learning

This course is for learners who want a progression course into employment in children’s pre-school education, or who are already working and need a qualification at level 3.

Length of course

Four hours a week plus six hours a week in a placement, for 18 months

Course content

The course covers the age range from birth to seven years and includes a mandatory unit and optional units based on your knowledge and skills. 

Topics covered include child development, health and safety, the foundation stage curriculum, safeguarding, personal development, and many others relevant to working with young children.

Entry requirements

You need to be at least 19 years of age and already working at or around level 2 in English and maths.

Work in a real work environment

You'll need to be working, volunteering, or on a practical placement, as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills.

If you're under 24 and don't have a full Level 2 qualification, or if you're on certain benefits, you may get a fee reduction or remission.
