Adult Skills and Community Learning

Learners who want a progression course into employment in school or who are already employed and need a qualification at level 3.

Length of course

4 hours a week plus 1 day a week in a placement, for 18 months

Course content

It covers the age range from birth to 19 years and is made up of mandatory units which are based on a knowledge and skills. Topics covered include child development, health and safety, the national curriculum, safeguarding, personal development and many others relevant to working in a school environment.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but you'll need to be at least 19 years of age and have a good standard of English. You'll also need to have at least 6 months experience of working regularly in a school environment.

Work placement

You'll need to already be working, volunteering or on a practical placement in a school, to show competence in both knowledge and skills.

Price on application.

You may get a fee reduction or remission if you're under 24 and don't have a full level 2 qualification, or are on certain benefits.

How to apply

You'll need to book an appointment to attend an information session with a tutor before you can start the course, to make sure it's the right one for you.

Sessions take place at Wellington House in Barnsley town centre and last about 30 minutes.

What you can do next

Progression onto HLTA, foundation degree, or full degree plus QTS.

Employment in a school in a more senior role.
