New community space and central library

Set to open in autumn 2018, the Library @ the Lightbox will be the first major building to be completed within The Glass Works, the retail and leisure development transforming the heart of the town. Library @ the Lightbox will become the cornerstone of the town centre with its striking design and transparent glass exterior. It will light up the new town square and invite people inside.

The Lightbox will be a great community building, library and much more. It’s designed to challenge ideas of what a library can be and make you want to keep coming back.

As well as being open for everyone living and working in Barnsley to enjoy, it’s a fantastic opportunity for businesses, organisations and community groups. The flexible space can be used for so many different things by so many people.

Busy spaces filled with activities for everyone will be balanced with quieter places for study and reflection.

Each floor will have its own special character and appeal. It will be easy to move between floors to find the right space for you – from the lively activity on the ground floor to the views from the roof terrace.

Fully accessible, the lightbox will also include:

  • Out of hours opening with new smart cards
  • A cafe that connects to the library
  • Wi-Fi everywhere
  • A sanctuary space
  • Almost double the current IT facilities
  • A roof terrace overlooking the town
  • A changing place
  • Opportunities for activities, functions and events

We'll be posting updates on this page and our Facebook and Twitter pages about the build as it continues to develop.  We hope that you'll enjoy the Library @ the Lightbox and all it has to offer once it opens in 2018.
