Barnsley Education Specialist Support Team (BESST)

We accept referrals from health professionals, nurseries, childminders, schools and post-16 colleges for children and young people with identified special educational needs and disability (SEND).

Eligibility criteria for referrals

We'll accept referrals for children and young people:

  • who display significant developmental delay compared to their peers in more than one area of their development (Portage Service)

  • who receive a medical diagnosis of a hearing impairment, a visual impairment, and/or an autism diagnosis for initial assessment

  • who receive a medical diagnosis whose identified needs can be met from the skill sets of the service for initial assessment

We'll also accept referrals from:

  • health professionals  - where the involvement of the service is specified
  • settings - where evidence is provided of how the service could provide support.

Referral forms 

To make a referral you will need to complete both the Portage referral form and the BESST agreement for involvement form.  Once these are completed you can email these to us or post them to: BESST Early Support to Schools, Corporate Mailroom, PO Box 634, Barnsley, S70 9GG.
