Education Welfare Service

The team includes 16 education welfare officers (EWOs), whose role is to ensure the regular school attendance, welfare and wellbeing of pupils, through assessment and home-school liaison, in order to achieve positive outcomes.

The service's management team includes a service manager, two area managers, two senior EWOs, and a designated EWO for Gypsy, Romany, Traveller families (GRT). Their responsibilities are included below.

Responsible for the management of all functions within the Education Welfare Service ensuring that all duties and responsibilities with regard to pupil absence, safeguarding, children missing education, elective home education, child employment and performance licensing are fully discharged.

Lead officer for the development of the council's strategy for promoting and raising attendance in schools across the borough and named attendance lead for the council.

Responsible for the management, supervision and operational performance of education welfare officers, In relation to statutory and non -statutory duties in order to ensure effective service delivery.

Responsible for ensuring that the team contributes towards improving outcomes for children and young people, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups.

Responsible for sharing up-to-date good practice in line with national and local policy through the delivery of attendance and safeguarding training and for working with partner agencies as outlined in the traded service model.

Derek Vint

Responsible for ongoing assessment and holistic support of vulnerable young people who are disengaged from learning opportunities, who face multiple barriers and are subject to Youth Offending Team interventions.

To provide the specialist link between the Youth Offending Team (YOT), the Education Welfare Service and schools within the borough.

Designated officer responsible for monitoring and tracking children who are missing education (CME) and who are electively home educated (EHE).

Manages the child employment, child performance licensing, and chaperone licences for the council.

Responsible for managing the fixed penalty arrangements for the council.
