Launchpad business start-ups

The Launchpad programme provides free support for pre-start-ups and businesses with less than 10 employees.

The programme is based at the Digital Media Centre in Barnsley. Advisors are available from Monday to Friday for appointments and workshops on various business related topics. They also run several Saturday events to give local people a snapshot into what they need to know to start their own business. These sessions are ideal to help aspiring entrepreneurs set up and run a successful business.

Local business travel plans

The local business travel plans are aimed at supporting 10 businesses (with 10+ employees). Working to prepare and implement a travel plan.  Also having a positive impact on reducing businesses’ carbon emissions. Support will also be provided to access funding opportunities.

Business support from the Chamber of Commerce

The Skills and Employability programme is a bespoke offering aimed at supporting 15 businesses.  Looking at targeted training and individual one to one support. The aim of the programme is to enhance the skills of current employees and encourage progression. While strengthening local business networks.

Get online with Berneslai Homes

This project plans to help Berneslai Homes tenants get online. Making better use of their internet access if they're not confident using it.

Up to 60 tenants will be supported with access to the internet, a connection to a years worth of free broadband, a Chromebook.  Plus one to one digital skills training and support to use the device.

Community Boost 'have a go' sessions

This project is a chance to try something new or develop a skill while making new friends. A wide range of workshops are on offer that will give you skills for life. The workshops are held during the day, evening and weekends.  They cover a broad range of activities and are provided by two different partners:

Oakwell Training

You may be interested in baking, cake making, pizza making and cooking skills, floristry and wreath making, vocal coaching, welding and fabrication, bricklaying, plastering, block paving, joinery, fork lift truck qualifications, vehicle vinyl wrapping and much more.

Community Tool Shed 

If your garden is overgrown and in need of some maintenance. Or you are simply interested in improving your gardening skills.  Then there’s a free chance through Community Boost Central.

You'll be provided with the tools, training, support and advice needed to bring your garden back to life. You can borrow the tools for an agreed length of time, with a delivery and pick-up service available. The Tool Shed scheme is open to anyone who is unemployed in the Barnsley Central Area. These are the council wards of Worsbrough, Dodworth, Kingstone, Stairfoot and Central)

These workshops are free for those that are unemployed and live within the Barnsley Central Area. You’ll be able to borrow equipment and learn from others. Public arts programme

We want to deliver public art in the central Barnsley area together with local people that offers engaging experiences.  Help us to celebrate what makes our area special.

Willow Weaving with Maggie Cooper

Support Heritage, learn a new skill and take your own willow weave home. Sessions are designed to be drop in.

Listening to young people

We're working with young people in the central area of Barnsley to identify opportunities to help them move into employment, training, or skills.

The team will be speaking to secondary school pupils and working with them.  Finding more and better ways to encourage young people to stay in education, training or move into employment. Chilypep will be working with young people in the area to lead the research and support.

Community makerspaces

A makerspace is somewhere where people gather to co-create, share resources and knowledge, work on projects, network, and build.

Brightbox is working with two libraries to complete a makerspace feasibility study. Up to four students from Barnsley College will be trained as makers-in-residence at their local library to bring people in and get creative. The project will work with up to ten community organisations, supporting them to conduct feedback sessions exploring how libraries can better connect with communities.

Environmental volunteering opportunities

We're offering a range of volunteering opportunities in the outdoors at Worsbrough Mill and Country Park. These will give people skills and learning development while also improving health and wellbeing. Activities are led by heritage professionals, providing opportunities to connect with others, team working, and giving back to the community.

Bus ticketing

The transport team at Barnsley Council will be working with employers to encourage people to use public transport. Support will be provided to those who are out of work and find a lack of transport is holding them back.

Grow mentoring

Grow mentoring is a project to provide pupils in years 10 to 13 with a relatable role-model – a trained, recent Sheffield Hallam University or University of Sheffield graduate – who can guide, champion and inspire them in their educational journey and beyond.

The graduate mentor will help the student to develop resilience, coach them into positive work and learning habits, and access personalised careers information.

Environment and sustainability workshops for primary schools

We’re creating new primary school workshops and self-led activities at Worsbrough Mill and Country Park based on sustainability, the environment and healthy eating. We plan to engage with 300 children and support them across primary schools in the central Barnsley area to help improve our cherished country park. There will also be opportunity for them to achieve an award for their efforts.

Cannon Hall pottery and horticultural training

We're running pottery and horticultural training classes at Cannon Hall’s new north range training room.

Adult and family pottery sessions will be advertised through the Cannon Hall website and social media channels.

We’re also running a horticulture industry taster course this spring, which will offer an insight into the horticulture industry and what career paths it can offer. There will be the opportunity for you to gain hands-on experience in the beautiful park and gardens, meet people working within the sector and find out what their current and previous roles have involved. The course offers the chance to have a go at practical tasks during some sessions, as well as receiving CV and application advice.

There will be eight sessions in total, running on Thursdays from 10am to 3pm. The course will begin on Thursday 28 April 2022 and is free of charge. Learn the Web is a free and flexible employability course for anyone interested in the web or the digital Industries. Learn the Web introduces around a dozen different digital job roles so you can find the perfect one for you.

Are you creative? Fancy a job in digital marketing? Want to learn to code? Business-minded? This is for you.

Learn about: designing and building websites, creating content and preparing it for search engines, developing brands, the new wave of digital technologies like crypto, NFTs, the decentralised web, and much more.

Part-taught in person at Barnsley's Digital Media Centre and part-taught online, Learn the Web is supported by local digital businesses and delivered by experienced industry professionals and educators.

Cybersecurity for school pupils

This project is supporting secondary schools in the central Barnsley area to raise awareness of cybersecurity in years 7, 8 and 9. The programme will support 60 students through a level 1 cybersecurity qualification and bring business representatives into school to talk to them about career opportunities in cyber security.
