Conservation areas are places that are recognised and protected for their important heritage and special character.
Elsecar has been a conservation area since 1976. Research undertaken as part of the recent Elsecar Heritage Action Zone over the past four years, has shown how unique and special Elsecar is. It was developed as an early industrial model village by the Earl Fitzwilliam of Wentworth Woodhouse from the late 1790s onwards.
As part of the Heritage Action Zone, we've worked with Purcell Architects to review the conservation area, including a number of proposed extensions. A new appraisal and management plan for Elsecar has been produced, informed by the research. Read the Elsecar conservation area appraisal and management plan.
The draft document was available for public consultation until the survey closed on Friday 22 July 2022.
