BMBC personal information privacy statement(s)

Barnsley council's personal information privacy statement.

In order to provide services to people, or in accordance with legislation, or to carry out government policy, the council needs to gather and process information about individuals. Only information necessary to provide the service, obey the law, or to carry out policy is collected, and is processed in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. We aim to operate to the highest standards of legality, fairness and security in processing an individual's information. The statement below shows the council's minimum level of assurance, although your attention is also drawn to the links to specific service statements (the entries will grow as statements are identified and added to the council's list).

The assurance we give includes -

  • We only collect and store information that is necessary for what we do.
  • When we collect information from you we will tell you why we need it and how we will use it.
This may be self evident from documentation used e.g. 'Application for ...'.
Please see links to specific service statements.
  • The council's Information Security policy (applicable to all employees and contractors) addresses the importance of personal information and sets down rules and guidance on information security.
  • We will keep information about you secure, and when no longer required we will dispose of it by a secure and proper process.
  • We will only share information with others if it is relevant and necessary to do so. Where we may share information we will, in the majority of cases, make it clear to you that we may do this, and identify the recipient(s). Please note that legislation may obviate this need e.g. Fraud investigation. In some cases specific rules relate to areas of information sharing importance, such as child protection.
Please see links to specific service statements.
  • As far as is practicable we will check the accuracy of information.
  • You have a right to see any information that we hold about you.
  • You have the right to ask us to correct any inaccurate information we hold about you.
  • You have the right to ask us not to send you promotional and marketing information.
