Information about BMBC research, data and statistics

This section provides research and statistical support to council departments, partners, businesses and members of the public.  We use a variety of data sources in order to examine, analyse and evaluate the performance of the Council including Public Sector Partners to understand the effects on the Borough. We use this intelligence and identify trends to help assist in shaping the future of Barnsley.

We help services, by maintaining social, economic and demographic information and statistics and support further information and intelligence gathering via: surveys, focus groups, public consultations events & projects.

  • Benefits: The benefits key fact sheet provides information on the different types of benefits available and some benefits are broken down by age group.
  • Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD): The Index of Multiple Deprivation is a UK government statistical study of deprived areas in UK local authorities. It is a major dataset that allows comparison of deprivation levels for small areas known as Lower Super Output Areas (LSOA) across the country.
  • Barnsley key fact sheet The Barnsley 2012 key fact sheet contains information on population estimates, education and skills, benefit claimants and much more making comparisons with England and Yorkshire and the Humber.
  • Heath and well-being key fact sheet: The health and well-being key fact sheet provide key statistics on the health and well-being of the population across the Borough, making comparisons with England and Yorkshire and the Humber.
  • Joint Strategic Needs Assessment: The Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) looks at the current and future health and social care needs of Barnsley.
