How we manage your waste

Let's talk rubbish! The year on year increase in the amount of waste produced is one of our biggest waste management problems. From reusing items and buying only what we need, we all need to reduce waste and dispose of it correctly. As we like to say... right thing, right bin!

In Barnsley, we're working hard to reduce, reuse and recycle as much of our material as possible. We all need to work together to make sure it goes to the correct place, first time. We have different bins to make sure correct material is sent to the most appropriate and economical processing plant to extract materials for recycling. By getting it 'right thing, right bin', we use less CO2 in transporting it for processing.

Locally, we have our own plans to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill. Our Municipal Waste Management Strategy sets out how we intend to:

  • reduce the total amount of waste Barnsley produces
  • make improvements so that half of the waste produced is either recycled or composted
  • where possible, recover energy from the rest of our waste and bury as little as possible in landfill sites. This is typically less than 3% of all waste received.

We work with Doncaster and Rotherham Councils as part of the BDR Waste Partnership. We have the aim to provide long-term, environmentally friendly, state of the art waste and recycling facility in Manvers, South Yorkshire.

We've also increased the materials we're able to take in at our Household Waste Recycling Centres. Most household items can be brought to be reused, recycled or correctly disposed of. We have an area for donations of reusable items. It includes electronics, kitchenware's, bric-a-brac and furniture. For a list of items we can accept, please visit our A to Z page.
