Platinum Jubilee weekend

This page includes everything you need to know about the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend and how to get involved across the borough.

Plans are underway across the borough as we join the rest of the UK to prepare for a Reet Royal Do to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, a phenomenal 70 years on the throne serving her country.

The Queen officially began her role at just 25 years old after the death of her father in February 1952, but she officially took her place on the throne and was crowned Queen at her coronation on 2 June 1952, becoming the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee.

An all-year programme of events has been taking place throughout the year in the UK and Commonwealth but will culminate with the Platinum Jubilee Weekend, which takes place across an extended four-day bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2 June to Sunday 5 June.

This special weekend provides our communities with an opportunity to come together and celebrate this once in a lifetime historical moment. Whether you’re a resident, community group, school or scout group, there are so many ways to take part or get involved.

What's on

National celebrations

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will consist of four days of celebration across the extended four-day UK bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June.

A number of national moments of reflection and official celebrations will be taking place, most of which will be televised over the weekend. Things to look forward to range from Trooping of the Colours and lighting of the beacon to the Platinum Party at the Palace.

So, if you’d prefer to celebrate in the comfort of your own home, you’ll still be able to enjoy the commemorations and feel part of this unprecedented milestone.

For full details about all the official celebrations, please visit The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Central Weekend website.

Local community events

There are lots of community events and activities being planned across the borough and it’s wonderful to see communities coming together to celebrate this milestone together.

To find out what’s happening in your area, please take a look at the official interactive map on the Platinum Jubilee events webpage. Simply put in your postcode and a full list of things taking place locally will be provided.

This also relies on event organisers logging their events on the map, so if you have organised an event, please make sure you add it to the map so that everyone in your community can find out what’s happening.

Another way to find out what’s happening in your area is to follow our Area Teams social media channels as they will be promoting things happening in their local area.

If you are still thinking about organising a public event or need any help and advice, please contact our dedicated Events team.

Beacon lighting

We’ll be taking part in the Platinum Jubilee’s first official event of the jubilee weekend by lighting a beacon in Barnsley town centre on Thursday 2 June. Our beacon will be one of over 2,033 being lit throughout the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories in recognition of The Queen’s long and selfless service.

A number of additional beacons will also be lit across the borough within local communities, so please keep an eye out for further information in your local area.

Barnsley Libraries

Join in the celebrations with our amazing Barnsley Libraries who’ll be dressed to impress with royal decorations and themed activities. There will be something for everyone to enjoy including dedicated royal book displays, jubilee themed crafts and story and rhyme sessions for children and families. Visit the events page see what’s happening at your local library.

Barnsley town centre

Our Town Centre will be the central hub buzzing with royal activity leading up to and over the jubilee weekend, with the Glass Works and markets joining in on the action. Highlights include a return of the Twisted: Barnsley Festival of Natural Art over the weekend and the construction of a magnificent sand sculpture using 20 tonnes of sand – that’s equivalent to the weight of around 1,763 corgis. Keep up to date with what’s happening in the town centre.

Barnsley Museums

Our museums will also be celebrating in style with lots of exciting things planned for all the family, including a ‘Reet Royal Do’ at Cooper Art Gallery - including stories, crafts and games in the garden as well as a royal garden party. There'll also be celebrations over the Jubilee weekend at Elsecar Heritage Centre, with three days of history, food, drink, entertainment, and shopping.
